PROFILE

My name is Taneem Fatima. I am a senior at Niles North High School. I am currently enrolled in the STEM Inquiry and Research class. My intention for this class is to discover and conduct unprecedented research. My research on Rheumatoid Arthritis was awarded gold at the Regional Science Fair and allowed me to compete in the State Science Fair on April 27.

EXPERIENCE

SIRs Student, Niles North

Skokie, IL---- 2017-2018

In the STEM Inquiry and Research class, students come up with a research topic at the beginning of the year, and conduct a thorough experiment on their topics. Students in this class have amazing teachers, who act as their mentors. In Spring, students present in the Regional Science fair for a chance to win awards and qualify for the Illinois State Science Fair held in April.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Was able to successfully find the correlation of histamine in Drosophila fruit flies, as compared to the flies that were induced with Turmeric and Vitamin K.

  • Concluded that Turmeric and Vitamin K might or might not be able to eradicate RA.

  • Won Gold in Regional Science Fair 2018

  • Won Gold in State Science Fair 2018

EDUCATION

NILES NORTH HIGH SCHOOL

2014-Present

Completed Science Courses:

  • Honors Biology

  • Honors Chemistry

  • AP Physics 1

  • STEM Inquiry and Research

  • Honors Anatomy and Physiology

  • Health Careers

SKILLS

  • Absorbance Microtiter plate reader

    • During the experiment, I had to use the plate reader to evaluate the histamine levels of the flies that were induced with turmeric and Vitamin K and then comparing it to the flies that weren’t.

  • Analyzing Data

    • After getting all the absorbance readings from the microplate reader, I had to compare the readings of Turmeric and Vitamin K and determine if it increased/decreased with the levels of histamine of the regular child. Analyzing data has helped me understand and interpret the results that I got and helped me understand them more thoroughly.

  • Public Speaking

    • At the Science Fair, I had to present my project to three judges. I had to present my project with creativity and accuracy in order for the judges to get a brief summary of what my project was about.

  • Excel Google Spreadsheet

    • After getting the data points that I needed, I had to use the points to make a graph and then to compare it to the standard histamine curve.

  • Speaking with Mentors

    • In order for this project to work, I had to speak with my mentor. Since I was working on Rheumatoid Arthritis, I needed the guidance of the doctors that specialize in this field. Since my mom has Rheumatoid Arthritis, I was really to be able to go and talk with her doctor. I had to explain what the project was all about and what I wanted the project to yield.
